The Age Good Food Shopping Guide 2011

As a gift my husband recently received a very impressive Mexican cookbook and I found myself with a new challenge; where would I (the designated family shopper) find some of the more specialised ingredients needed. Luckily for me, just as I was at my wits end a colleague passed on a copy of The Age Good Food Shopping Guide 2011.

This handy reference guide had me heading in the right direction in minutes through the use of an easy to navigate contents page divided into produce groups such as bread, fish, cakes and cuisines such as Indian and Italian. Alternatively you can turn to the back pages to look up the alphabetical list of businesses included or the handy locality guide.

With guide in hand we headed out to USA Foods in Moorabbin to purchase the necessary Mexican supplies. True to its description in The Age Good Food Shopping Guide 2011 USA Foods was a treasure trove of American produce. After our adventure in the land of Twinkies and Dr Pepper we decided to investigate a few other businesses listed in the Guide.

An investigative drive to Dandenong revealed two treasures, Dandenong Market and MKS Spices ‘n’ Things, two of the editor’s top picks. Dandenong market was a bright and colourful market offering a great range of fruit and vegetables at fantastic prices, a quality butcher and the Peanut Market which offers a great array of nuts as well as a selection of flours. The market also offers seafood, bread, confectionary and gift items. Just a short trip down the road MKS Spices ‘n’ Things is everything you would expect of an Indian Supermarket, a feast for the senses.

While this guide does not list every retail outlet it does list many of the very best Melbourne has to offer. It is easy to use if you are looking for a certain product or just an alternative shopping experience in your local area. Reviews are generally a paragraph in length giving you just enough information on what is sold without extending beyond need. The details you need to contact the store for more information and a Melways reference to help you get there are included.

After visiting a few more of the recommended shops, Boccaccio Cellars, South Melbourne Market and Leo’s Fine Food and Wine, I have found The Age Good Food Shopping Guide 2011 to be not only accurate but useful.
