Melbourne's Best Bush, Bay and City Walks by Julie Mundy
A full colour guide to over 40 Melbourne walks
Laura Cullen
Melbourne is a city of discovery, there is something new every time you visit. This guide to Melbourne’s Best Bush, Bay and City Walks captures the diversity the city has to offer in the variety of walks it includes.
Author Julie Mundy is a local who is passionate about the outdoors and discovering interesting facts about the places she visits which is evident in the many interesting tidbits she includes in the over 40 walks in this book.
Visitors using this guide can choose between gentle bayside strolls, invigorating hikes through forests to stunning views, or simply amble through laneways of history. All of the walks are graded from easy to hard with a description of what these grades mean at the start of the book. The expected time the walk should take, the distance given in kilometers and how you can get to the start of the walk are all elements included at the start of each walk description.
After the key information the walk is described step by step including points of interest that you can stop at along the way and a map to ensure you stay on track.
The walks are divided into seven geographic areas; inner city, the southwest, Melbourne’s west, Melbourne’s north, Melbourne’s East, the Southeast and Southeast: Bayside. Personal favourites are the Laneways and Heritage walks in the CBD and the Red Bluff 6 kilometer return circuit.
The only minor detractor is the failure to include a few walks of the Mornington Peninsula (Melbourne’s favourite tourist playground). The word ‘Bay’ in the title of the text is somewhat misleading in this manner. However considering there is a separate Walks of the Mornington Peninsula book it is not such a massive concern, just slightly inconvenient.
Overall Melbourne’s Best Bush, Bay and City Walks is a thorough guide that will have you getting to know Melbourne in a more intimate and scenic manner. Worth a look for active people who love exploration.
