Matilda Bay was the first new brewery to open in Australia after World War II. Many craft brewers have followed in their footsteps, but they were real brewing pioneers. It all started in 1984 when a bunch of guys with a passion for making great beer got together at the famed Sail and Anchor Hotel in Fremantle, Western Australia and formed the Matilda Bay Brewing company.

In 2005 they crossed this wide brown land to Victoria and opened up 'The Garage' in Dandenong. The new facility gave trhem more opportunity to refine their beers and continue to invent new ones, including Barking Duck, a champ of a beer that won them Bronze in the 2005 Beer World Cup in the USA.

Since then, experimenting with new brews, winning awards and especially the loyalty of beer lovers thirsting for something special has been what we’ve been all about. In fact, Matilda Bay is the current Grand Champion Brewery of the Australian International Beer Awards, having scored 'Champion' status in the Wheat Beer and Reduced Alcohol categories in the process.

Today Matilda Bay continues to push the boundaries of beer while respecting the long history and tradition of brewing round the world. Not all their experiments succeed, but over the years we have made beers that cover the full spectrum of flavours and styles with absolute dedication to our craft and to the enjoyment and education of true beer enthusiasts.

For those beers in their range that become too popular for the Garage to meet production, they call on their favourite cousins down at the Cascade Brewery in Hobart. Cascade have been a fantastic supporter of Matilda Bay along their journey and they are now lucky enough to have some of their larger brands – like Beez Neez and Redback Original – brewed out of Australia’s oldest brewery.
