Produce to Platter, Mornington Peninsula – Jonette George and Daniele Wilton
Vignerons, restaurateurs, provedores open their doors
Produce to Platter, Mornington Peninsula is the second book for authors Jonette Goerge and Daniele Wilton, and has been so popular that after only two months on the street, it will have to be reprinted before Christmas.
Their first book, Greater Noosa Produce to Platter was also a sell-out, with plan to rewrite next year. The girls are currently writing a book on Geelong and surrounding regions which will be a similar style and format.
Chefs from throughout the Mornington Peninsula region present their signature recipes and we are treated to the 'secrets' of restaurants such as Ten Minutes By Tractor’s Rolled Rabbit Loin, La Pétanque’s Blood Orange and Almond Pudding, and The Tasting Station’s Prawn and Pear Tortellini. There are 42 recipes in all from the best restaurants and provedores in the region.
Beautiful photography by local, Charlie Brown, fills the book with a pictorial display of the Mornington Peninsula today. Full pages are given over to delightful photos throughout the region, from top to bottom.
The book begins with a philosophical piece written by Jonette about the circle of life. She says, “I wonder about today’s generation and I wish everyone could be more connected with the earth by getting hands dirty, and creating tasty wonders that sprout from the soul.... This connection is important to understand the true circle of life”.
We are then treated to a history of the traditional owners, and what they used to hunt and gather on the Peninsula and how they cooked. This is followed by a précis of the history British colonisation of the region and the settlers who started wine production and early day farming.
This book will fill you with tastes, wines, experiences and recipes foraged from a variety of locals. 347 pages are dedicated to the people of the region, with stories about how they grow their produce, the way they cook their food, the way they grow their vines and the way they make their wine.
The book is available in a stunning coffee table version. Measuring 320mm x 380mm and weighing 4.6kg, this version of the book is nearly a coffee table in itself! The price is only A$90 and will make a wonderful addition to any collection of books on cooking and regional Australia. The book is also available as a soft cover at A$35, making it more suitable for giving as a gift.
