The Crittenden family, Crittenden Estate in the Mornington Peninsula

Garry Crittenden may be in his mid 70s and relinquishing control of the Mornington Peninsula winery to the next generation, but his wine-making skills are still sharp and now he's got the time now to have some fun. And the result of that fun is The Big Chair by Garry, a small batch pinot noir made the old fashioned way.

Some hand picked grapes, some foot-stomping and hand-pressing along with some time have all gone into creating this estate pinot noir.

Garry writes:

"As I slowly but inevitably cut myself adrift from day to day issues within the family wine business I have come to an arrangement with my children Rollo and Zoe that will see me making a batch of my own wine, without intervention, during each vintage for as long as I am physically able.

It will always be estate-grown pinot noir, and I will make it using 'old fashioned' winemaking techniques. Quantities will be small, a few hundred bottles only, and distribution very limited.

My first such (hush hush) vintage was 2016, bottled in February 2017 and has just been released. Having said that, it will age for years under good storage conditions. In fact the wine and packaging was so hush hush that no one, not even Zoe and Rollo, had seen the labeling until very recently.

The 2017 vintage is safely slumbering in two French barriques as I write, and I’ve been walking the vines for my 2018 grapes."

The Big Chair by Garry 2016 Pinot Noir is available at A$55 a bottle directly from Crittenden Wines »
