Watchbox Wines is located in Rutherglen in North-East Victoria's Legends, Wine & High Country.
Restaurant/Cafe on site.
The winery is named after a piece of local history and prominent local feature – The Watchbox. After moving into the valley it was noticed that the locals referred to going ‘up the Watchbox' when talking about going up Watchbox Road. This seemed a curious turn of phrase. They learned that the Watchbox was not only the name of a rocky escarpment overlooking the vineyard but that local history identified a granite knoll to the west of this escarpment as the site for ‘the watchbox'. This watchbox was where the stockmen from the Eldorado Run watched over the stock grazing the Indigo and Black Dog Creek Valleys in the early 1800's. Each morning these stockmen would depart from the hut located on the Indigo Valley to watch out for marauding wild dogs and cattle duffers – the site of this hut is generally felt to be at the end of Watchbox Road!
