Vintage 2015 was certainly one to remember for Rutherglen producers as it was one that we have been hoping for. No frost events, no heavy rain and no heatwave. There were a few concerns early, with 150mm of rain coming in the first 6 weeks of the year, but then the weather dried out nicely.

Vintage kicked off in Rutherglen with Sparkling Chardonnay base on January 23 - one of the earliest recorded starts, which was a little surprising given the cooler than average January temperatures.

The weather then turned pleasant and warm with some cooler nights which helped to consolidate acid and flavour in the grapes. This resulted in an even ripening pattern for the next intakes of Riesling, Chardonnay and Moscato grapes which followed at the start of February. Surprisingly, some vignerons also took some reds in at this time – again, the earliest they had experienced this. An inch and a half of rain in the middle of February gave the winemakers a small chance to catch their breath, but before long the Shiraz, Durif and Cabernet wines were all ripening in a timely fashion.

Our traditional Indian summer allowed our fortified winemakers have enjoyed near perfect end-of-season conditions enabling extended ripening conditions for high concentration of flavours. Ripeness levels in excess of 20 Beaume were reported widely across the region, providing excellent material for the soleras.

A hallmark of the season has been consistent high quality across all varieties, but picking a standout is splitting hairs. The cropping levels were slightly above average, which was a welcome surprise.

One Rutherglen vigneron declared it to be “the best vintage in the fifteen years I have been working this block”. This sentiment will be echoed by others in the coming months.
