The original Darriwill property is situated on the junction of the Moorabool River and Sutherlands Creek. The bluestone homestead was completed in 1856 by George and Marianne Hope, and was set up as a grazing property and vineyard. Where the vineyard once stood on the eastern slope, there is an extensive planting of mature bunya-bunyas, pines, olives, and a copse of claret ash and elm trees.
The present owners, Dougal and Nellie Ramsay, have set out on a journey to create a chain of retail stores that embraces all of the lost qualities of the traditional Australian country store. Dougal's passion for preserving many aspects of Australian rural life comes through in his artwork. Trained as an illustrator, his work is found in many private collections both here and overseas.
