Crawford River Wines is located in Condah, in the Henty wine region of Western Victoria, on the Great Ocean Road.
Inspired by its potential to produce superior quality grapes, John and Catherine Thomson planted their vineyard in 1975 at Crawford River, in far south-west Victoria. It was then a relatively unexplored wine growing region and indeed remains merely a blot on the canvas, though the area is now known as the GI of Henty.
The Crawford River vineyard lies at the alluvial edge of a volcanic lava flow. The 11.5 Ha vineyard has its roots in an unusually complex, mineral-rich soil base. Gravelly, friable, basalt loam overlays permeable clay which in turn lies above a limestone base created by an ancient, risen seabed.
A cellar door building added in 2000, was designed by Graeme Gunn, where visitors can drink in the glorious views of the vineyard that sweep down towards the Crawford River.
