Jen Pfeiffer is one of only two female finalists vying for the prestigious The Wine Society Young Winemaker of the Year 2009 award.

Jen was just four when her family purchased the historic Old Distillery winery in Rutherglen and she grew up under the watchful eye of her father, Chris, himself an iminent figure in the industry.

"This place was founded by a Frenchman from Bordeaux,. He came out in the late 1800’s and planted the original vines on what we call our Sunday Creek Vineyard which is on the banks of the Murray River and also surrounded by Sunday Creek. He was here for about 30 years and started building our famous Sunday Creek Bridge when he unfortunately came to his death. Since that time, the building has been run as a distillery and a winery. Prior to our family owning the winery Seppelts had this winery as their distillery as well.

"Well I think the first thing you will be greeted by is a big warm smile at the cellar door. The grounds are really beautiful; we’ve got century-old pine trees surrounding the winery and a beautiful lush green garden all the time, and a lovely historic wine cellar as well. Inside you are always made most welcome. It’s a very relaxed atmosphere where you can try several different types of wines, and chat to one of the family or one of our staff members.

"Sunday Creek flows in between our vineyard and our winery. We have a bridge that connects the vineyard and the winery, Sunday Creek Bridge, and that’s a perfect place for people to come and have a picnic with a bottle of fine Pfeiffer wine, see the turtles swimming down below, and if you are really lucky a platypus as well.

"I’ve been living in a winery family for most of my life, and so some people say it’s in the blood and that well may be true. It’s something that people who enjoy wine tend to have a real passion about whether you’re a producer or a consumer. This is a beautiful part of the world, the scenery is fantastic, the other people in the area are fantastic, and it is a small community, but I love the peace and quiet and I love the natural beauty that we have here.

"There’s a lot of other young people working in the wine industry in Rutherglen at the moment so we all are friends and can socialise together as well."
