Western Australia - top of the Margaret River run
By Louise Johnson
The Margaret River wine region is such a beautiful area to explore. If you’re mad on wine this region has one of the best reputations in Australia for making supreme quality wines. Add some great local produce, amazing restaurants and a fantastic coastline and you’ve got an amazing epicurious holiday on your hands.
This itinerary picks out our favourites in the northern parts of the GI named Margaret River, but they are just a small selection of what’s on offer. If you’re there for just a day these will keep you busy, but if you’re there longer then take the opportunity to visit the cellar doors in between our recommendations and discover more great flavours.
Stop 1 – Wise Winery
You’re on the wrong side of the country to see the sun come up, but the Cape Naturaliste Lighthouse is a great place for an early morning walk and you’ll have earned your breakfast and first tasting at the restaurant at Wise Winery, which serves breakfast from 9am and has amazing views over the sea. Their cellar door opens at 10am, so you can start your tasting day. If you’re a shiraz lover the 2007 is a real winner.

Stop 2 – Lamont’s Margaret River
If you’re dawdling, and there’s plenty of attractions to distract you on the short drive from Wise to Lamonts, then you should time you arrival here for lunch. The restaurant is fantastic and a great spot for a leisurely afternoon. Chef Kate Lamont is a regional hero; her philosophy is to ‘take the best produce you can find, you treat it with respect and intelligence and then let the food speak for itself’. If you can’t stop for a meal, make sure you head to Lamont’s in East Perth when you get back to the big smoke for a regional reminder. At the cellar door taste the White Monster, a small production chardonnay which is destined for cult status.

Stop 3 – Swings and Roundabouts
If you’re looking for a friendly welcome you’ll find it at Swings and Roundabouts. All the good things are here – a wood fire pizza oven, comfy sofas, a great verandah looking over the vines and rolling hills and a superb coffee machine to recharge your designated drivers. There are some seriously delicious wines on the Swings and Roundabouts, Kiss Chasey, Life of Riley and Laneway labels – look out for the sparklers. You could be here awhile so get comfortable.

Stop 4 – Clairault Wines
One of the originals, Clairault was the sixth vineyard to be planted in the Margaret River region and has grown significantly since the Martin family took over the property in 1999. Plantings have increased from 30 acres to 120 acres, the cellar door and restaurant have grown and a five-star spa resort is planned within the next two years. The Clairault Estate wines are handcrafted and specially selected from the oldest vines, now in their 30th year of production. Yields can be as low as two tonnes per acre and careful hands-on winemaking techniques are used to get the most from this fruit.
