Margaret River is acknowledged as the home of some of Australia’s finest premium wines. Its Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet blends in particular are acknowledged as being among the best of their kind in the New World. Indeed, the region is predominantly red wine country - just. Around 53 percent of its total vineyard area is planted to red wine grapes.

Cabernet Sauvignon (1317ha) leads the way, with a 23 percent share of the region’s vineyard area. Shiraz (872ha) and Merlot (539ha) are Margaret River’s other significant red varieties. Interestingly, a small number of producers here make some of the best Zinfandel wines outside of the United States.

Chardonnay (979ha) is the region’s most highly prized white grape, though it has an enviable reputation for the quality of its Sauvignon Blanc (808ha) and Semillon (664ha) which are frequently blended together in dry white wine fashion. Small pockets of Verdelho (79ha) produce a distinctive dry style of wine with stone fruit characters.
