The 2010 Royal Queensland Wine and Food Show Awards Dinner held recently saw the Governor of Queensland present the Stodart Trophy for the best gold medal winning one year old dry red table wine to McWilliams Wines Barwang Top Tier 2009.

The Royal Queensland Wine Show is the first major national wine show held in capital cities each year and the only to maintain classes for one-year old wines still in the barrel. Together these factors offer the wine industry their first comprehensive look at new and upcoming releases each year, and an excellent opportunity for wine producers to benchmark overall wine quality before the new wines are released for sale.

After five days of judging, the esteemed Phillip John, Chairman of Judges for the Royal Queensland Wine Show for the last nine years, says that fantastic seasonal conditions of the '2009 and 2010 vintages – after a hot drought year in 2008 – is responsible for this year's wine show awarding 113 gold medals, nearly double the number of gold medals awarded last year.

Mr John commented “2009 premium Chardonnay and red favourites Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon are excellent, and 2010 whites are looking extremely good, with gold medals awarded all the way through Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Viognier and Pinot Gris.  We are seeing a trend of table wines made from Tasmanian Chardonnay emerging; after eight years of continual drought around the country our cooler regions are getting warmer, leading to consistently better grapes.”

“This is an unbelievably well run show that has stuck to it's core values and objectives – we're here to get results, not to be fashionable.  We recruit the best judges including professional wine makers, Masters of Wine who bring an international perspective and at least three judges each year who are based in Queensland.”

For the first time in the Show's 133 year history a trophy for the best gold medal winning Queensland wine made and produced in Queensland by a Queensland winery was awarded to Ballandean Estate Wines Gen 3 Shiraz 2007. Sponsored by Queensland’s own Masters of Wine Andrew Corrigan and Peter Scudamore-Smith, the Corrigan Scudamore-Smith Trophy represents a great incentive for local producers, and public recognition of the high quality of wine being produced in this state.

The Show's top award is the Courier Mail Trophy for the champion wine selected from all trophy winning wines, excluding current vintage whites, one year old reds and fortified wines, won by the Foster's Group Leo Buring Leonay Maturation Release Riesling 2005.
