COPIA closes its doors
The American Center for Wine, Food and the Arts is no more
COPIA, the American Center for Wine, Food and the Arts located in the heart of the Napa Valley, California, has filed for bankruptcy and will be placed on the market.
COPIA was a non-profit 'discovery center, whose mission was to explore, celebrate and share the many pleasures and benefits of wine, its relationship to food and its significance to (American) culture. COPIA offered visitors wine and food tasting programs, exhibitions, organic edible gardens, films, concerts, fine and casual dining, and shopping'. (Wikipedia).
It opened in 2001 after significant financial and other support from the late Robert Mondavi and his wife, in partnership with UC (Davis), 70 key regional supporters and others, including government. Its closure echoes that of the failed Australian National Wine Centre in Adelaide, which also never reached projected attendance figures; it seems that worldwide, people would rather the genuine winery experience than a facsimile.
