The New England region in northern New South Wales has become an officially recognised wine region and will be known as New England Australia.

The new brand name will be marketed internationally and represents 42 vineyards from Tenterfield to Tamworth.

The NSW Wine Industry Association describes the new region as unique in Australia due to its topographical diversity throughout the region from high altitude vineyards with a number of vineyards being above 1,000m, to cool climate vineyards along the spine of the Great Dividing Range to the lower and warmer vineyards on the western edges of the New England tablelands. This high altitude and cool-climate makes New England perfect for Riesling.

The secretary of the Southern New England Vignerons Association, Norm Maher, says local winegrowers are now able to market and brand their wine and clearly identify themselves within a region. It has taken three years to achieve independent recognition for the region.
