Mr. Andrew Thomas of Thomas Wines in the Hunter Valley chaired the NSW Small Winemakers Wine Show. He was assisted by Mike De Iuliis (De Iuliis Wines), Deb Pearce (Sommelier & wine writer), Bryan Martin (Ravensworth Wines), Mike Bennie (wine writer) and Sarah Crowe (Bimbadgen Wines).
The total medal strike rate this year increased by 2.1% from last year to 43.1%. The medal breakdown was 4.1% gold, 8.7% silver and 30.3% bronze.
Chairman of judges, Andrew Thomas, was delighted and stressed the importance of shows like this that give small makers a chance to put their wines up for assessment.
“These shows are important to the wine industry from a regional and small producer perspective. It allows small producers to benchmark their wines against the rest of the state without the presence of the larger producers, and can improve the chances of medal and trophy winners getting a foothold in restaurants and retailers,” he said.
“We work very hard to preserve the integrity of the show by ensuring that a medal winning wine is well deserved and those wines would hold their own in any wine show in the country.”
“This was a great result for the Orange region,” added Taste Orange Executive Office Rhonda Sear.
“We are receiving ongoing awards for our wines, particularly the whites, so to win the best red wine of the show with one of our Shiraz’s and a trophy for an alternative variety like Tempranillo shows the diversity and potential of the region.”
Other recent achievements for Orange Region Wines include a tranche of trophies at the 2011 Boutique Wine Awards:
- Wine of the Show
2010 Philip Shaw No.11 Chardonnay - Max Lake Memorial Trophy (Best Chardonnay)
